ENERGY MANAGEMENT

EnergyNeeds
Minimizing energy consumption is one of the emerging worldwide priorities for organizations achieving the objective of reducing energy costs, improving sustainability of business and reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.
Implementing an effective Energy Management System (EnMS) is required for allowing organizations to identify, monitor and improve its own energy resources thereby ensuring sustainability. ISO 50001 is a new standard on energy management systems has been prepared by a project committee established by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) to provide industrial plants, commercial facilities and other organizations with guidelines to implement a systematic approach for managing energy resources.

The document, being based on common elements, is fully integrated with other relevant ISO standards such as ISO 9001 - Quality management systems and ISO 14001 - Environmental management systems, according to the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), the U.S. member of ISO.
The standard will be launched in 2011 and will provide organizations and companies with a recognized framework for integrating energy efficiency into their management practices.
Multi-national organizations will have access to a single, harmonized standard for implementation across the organization with a logical and consistent methodology for identifying and implementing energy efficiency improvements. The standard will also:

  • Assist organizations in making better use of their existing energy-consuming assets
  • Offer guidance on benchmarking, measuring, documenting, and reporting energy intensity improvements and their projected impact on reductions in GHG emissions
  • Create transparency and facilitate communication on the management of energy resources
  • Promote energy management best practices and reinforce good energy management behaviors
  • Assist facilities in evaluating and prioritizing the implementation of new energy-efficient technologies
  • Provide a framework for promoting energy efficiency throughout the supply chain
  • Facilitate energy management improvements in the context of GHG emission reduction projects.
